In February of 1999 David Neeleman founded the company, “NewAir” (now known as JetBlue). Before Neeleman founded JetBlue, he worked for Southwest Airlines. There, he teamed up with other Southwest employees to form the company. Having the experience of working for Southwest Airlines, they decided to copy the blueprint: offer low travel. But they sought to separate themselves from southwest by offering travelers in flight entertainment. Neeleman (former Chairman, now CEO) was quoted, “Jet blue looks to bring humanity back to air travel.” In September 1999 the airline was awarded 75 takeoff and landing slots at John F. Kennedy International Airport, and received formal U.S. authorization in February 2000. The airline started operating on February 11, 2000; the first flight went between JFK and Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Executives of JetBlue had the idea to associate the Airline with the city of New York, hence call it “Taxi.” The idea was soon dropped due to several reasons: the negative association behind New York City taxis; the ambiguity of the word taxi with regard to air traffic control; and a threat from investor JP Morgan to pull its share of $20 million of the airline's initial funding unless the name was changed. The threat was taken heavily because JP Morgan’s share amounted to 15% of their total initial funding of $128 Million.
The company quickly went to work to offer flights elsewhere. On November 18, 2000 the company added service between JFK and Buffalo NY. March 16, 2000 launched service between JFK and Tampa, FL. July 21, 2000 it begins flights between JFK and Orlando, FL. On June 23, 2000 JetBlue received it 5th Air craft which allowed them to expand more. July 21, 2000 commences flights between JFK and Ontario, CA. August 3, 2000 launches services from JFK to Rochester, NY and Oakland, CA. on September 7, 2000 added service between JFK and Burlington, VT.
