DISNEY SWEATSHOPS IN BANGLADESH
I found an article on Google.com about a sweatshop named Niagra Textiles Ltd. In it, was a list of things that were done to the workers while working under the harsh conditions. In the list: workers being slapped and punched for not working fast enough, workers were forced to work 14 hour days, 7 days a week with at MOST one day off per month. Workers were also forced to work all-night 19 hour shifts at least once a week and were only allowed to sleep in the factory. I also read that workers are forced between 42-100 hours of overtime and are cheated by getting paid for not even half of their overtime hours. They’re paychecks are held for over two weeks. And to these workers, getting paid late or on time is a matter of life and death. Sewers are paid as little as 11 cents per hour equaling to $5.28 and helpers are paid as little as $3.16 per week averaging about seven cents an hour. When managers were notified in advance of routine visits, they would force the workers into lying about the conditions they work in. The factory would be very clean and workers would fake their happiness.
I applied the feminist theory because there was an instance when three women who had been sewers for Niagra Textiles, Ltd for over seven years, asked for one day off a week (Friday is the Muslim holiday). They were denied a vacation and were immediately fired and left penniless. Also, the company does not pay for maternity leave benefits nor do any of the workers have insurance. There is not even a doctor in the entire factory just in case someone were to get hurt.
After many reports of abuse and late wages, since 2004, Disney has yet to do anything about the conditions in Niagra Textiles, Ltd.
