Bartholomew Diaz

Bartholomew Diaz was born in 1450 and died in 1500. He also a Portuguese explorer, who began sailing at the age of 36. Bartholomew Diaz was the first European to see the stormy Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa. Diaz was one of the great Portuguese sea captain and explorer. Bartholomew was forced into his voyage by King John because if not he will be killed.
His first trip was in 1481 and 1482 to the Gold Cost of Africa. Later discover the Cape of Good Hope in May of 1488. Bartholomew had 3 ships 2 for sailing and 1 for putting the food. He was trying to find a new way to china so that they could discover that he had traveled 1,400 miles. It took 13 days until he found land. Other people say that he died because he got lost out at the sea. Bartholomew died because on the way back from Brazil there was a storm and his ship sunk.
When Bartholomew Diaz went back to Lisbon, he had to pass the Cape of storms again. He got to Lisbon, he told King John about the voyage. King John heard about the Cape of Storms, he decided to call it Cape of Good Hope. King John was afraid that sailors wouldn’t want to go to a cape that sounded that dangerous. In 1500, Diaz sailed again, but at that time he was not the captain. The captain was Pedro Cabral. They got to the Cape of Good Hope; they were hit by a storm. Four ships were lost, and Diaz was one of them. That’s when Bartholomew Diaz died.
