What is the difference between management and leadership? However, these two words actually have very different meanings and describe different concepts. The biggest difference between managers and leaders is the way they motivate the people who work or follow them, and this sets the tone for most other aspects of what they do. Leaders have vision, strategies, goals and values as their guide-post for action and behavior. They are observers and sensitive people. They know their team and increase mutual confidence. Managing and leading are simply two different ways to organize people. Managers usually focus on formal, rational methods whereas a leader is stirred by emotions and passion. Naturally, groups are more loyal to leaders usually than to managers.
Today, the ever-changing business environment exerts great emphasis upon leadership. Leaders do not have subordinates at least not when they are leading. Many organizational leaders do have subordinates, but only because they are also managers. But when they want to lead, they have to give up formal authoritarian control, because to lead is to have followers, and following is always a voluntary activity. Business leaders show maturity and team orientation to help them understand the difference between encouraging and motivating others for productive outcomes than ruling them at the same time as emphasizing upon teamwork. Leadership demands leaders to have characteristics like dominance which enables them to be decisive in their work actions with assertiveness in thinking style and attitude.
Telling people what to do does not inspire them to follow you. You have to appeal to them, showing how following them will lead to their hearts' desire. They must want to follow you enough to stop what they are doing and perhaps walk into danger and situations that they would not normally consider risking.
