Attracting older volunteers

There are many benefits in attracting older volunteers to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Sacramento. Older workers have the benefit of life experience that they can, and are willing to, share with the clients of Boys and Girls Club. The demographic population that the Club provides services to will greatly benefit from the experience, education, wisdom and the knowledge and skills acquired over a lifetime from this valuable sector of potential employees and volunteers. Older workers can assist in providing the essentials as well as contribute to the nurturing and education of the children.
A volunteerism study done at the University of Kentucky by Dr. Ken Culp, III provides interesting and useful information regarding attracting older volunteers to your organization. Providing the retiring Baby Boomers with opportunities to make a difference in the next generation of leaders will attract them to volunteer and contribute to the Club’s mission of consistently providing youth the opportunities they need to become productive citizens. Providing intergenerational volunteer opportunities provides a two-fold service to the community. The children benefit from having stable, mature mentors and the older volunteers will be provided an opportunity to impact the next generation directly. Studies show that this is a large characteristic for this retiring generation.
