Fire Helmets

SUBJECT: Formal Report- Standardizing Helmets

Executive Summary: I have looked at several different types of helmets in my research. I have narrowed my paper down two the two most common helmet styles. The Cairns Traditional and the newer Cairns 1010, which is more of a modern type helmet. In my paper I will also go into sub-categories such as helmet construction and eye protection. After my research I found that the Traditional type helmet has a disadvantage in size and sometimes eye protection but it does keep water off of you a lot better than the 1010. Although, the 1010 is lighter, and offers better eye protection with the full face visor, yet it does not keep water from going down your collar. I found that the case in both helmets is the new carbon fiber helmet is much stronger than the leather helmet.

Recommendation: I will first off recommend that department standardize helmet type, color and construction for the sake of safety and the fact that it looks more uniform. I will also recommend that the department but the Cairns Traditional helmet because of its overall performance.

Background: For this research project I wanted to do it on something that could make a difference and possibly one day save a firefighter’s life. The fire helmet sounded like a great place to start at. Cairns has been making fire helmets longer than anyone else and for that reason they have a very good reputation in the fire service. They are the leading helmet manufacturer because they have kept up with new safety technology and materials to create a better fire helmet for you as the firefighter. The two most common structural helmets made by Cairns are the Traditional and the 1010. When Cairns began making the helmets they were made out of tough, reinforced leather.
