Persuasive speech essay against cigarette smoking

Introduction:
Attention getter: “Cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide, and illegal drugs combined.” ( www.cancer.org) Are you killing yourself?

Credibility: Cigarette smoking affects my life. Other than the dangers of inhaling second hand smoke daily, my loved ones are consumed by this addiction. My father, my boyfriend, and my best friend are all cigarette smokers. For as long as I can remember I’ve known about the dangers of smoking and so have they. But does this stop them? Of course not, because they are addicted. Like many others they choose not to face reality and ignore the facts. Cigarettes kill. For those of you who are also addicted or maybe know someone who is I would like to share with you some valuable information I have gathered on the dangers of smoking.

Thesis: Smoking cigarettes will kill you, but it is never too late to quit.

Restatement and Division: Everyone should be aware of the dangers of smoking. If you are a smoker or would like to help someone who is you should first review the facts and statistics proving how harmful cigarettes are. You should learn about the history of this product and what makes it so addicting. Finally you should make a plan to quit. It is never too late to stop smoking.

1. Each year about 438,000 people die in the U.S. from tobacco use. Yet according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 44.5 million U.S. adults are currently smokers. This is more than one out of five people. In a classroom here of about 25 this means only five of you are smokers. I’m willing to bet there are more of you than that. Now, I’m not here to judge or nag. I simply want to inform you of the dangers this can cause, and of the ways to escape them.
