NANO TECHNOLOGY

The field of nanotechnology might have been dismissed as ‘pseudoscience’ and ‘futurology’ in the past,but is now recognized as one that could potentially change everything in our lives….Nanotechnology is and enabling with an expected impact on electronics data storage,transportation,medicine and space exploration.
The word Nanotechnology is derived from the Greek word “NANO” which means “Dwarf”.It involves engineering and manufacturing at the molecular,or nanometer level.

What Does Nanotechnology Mean?
“Research ans technology development at the atomic,molecular and macromolecular levels in the length scale of approximately 1-100 nanometer range,to provide a fundamental understanding of phenomena and materials at the nanoscale and to create and use structures,devices and systems that have novel properties and functions because of their small or intermediate size.”

Characterization of Nanotechnology:
Nanotechnology can be viewed as a series of technologies that are used individually or in combination to make products and applications,and to better understand science.Some of the technologies are currently available,while others are under development and may be useful in years or decades,if at all.One way of Characterizing nanotechnology is by “tools”,”materials”,”devices” and “intelligent materials and machines”.

Based On Tools:
The tools of Nanotechnology include:
Atomic force Microscope(AFM)
Scanning tunneling Microscope(STM)
Molecular modeling software

They help users to visualize and manipulate items at the nanoscale level such as atoms,viruses etc.,

Based On Materials:
They are further classified into three main categories:
1)Raw Nanomaterials
2)Nanostructured materials
3)Nanotubes and Fullerenes
