Culture

Culture generally mentions the patterns of human activity and the symbolic structures that give such activities significance and importance. Different cultures reflect different theoretical bases for understanding human activity. Culture is music, literature, painting and sculpture, theater and film. Culture is Unique in the United States with its immigrants, Germany and China.
The United States is a land of many people and many different cultures itself. All different cultures from around the world come to America and form the American culture. Since the settlement of Jamestown in 1607 over 45 million people have immigrated to the United States. “The country was regarded as the land of the free, a haven for those oppressed by tyrants, and a place of opportunity”. Up until 1882, the policy of the United States was almost one of free and unrestricted admittance. Not everybody wanted the policy of letting everyone in like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. George Washington once said “my opinion with respect to immigration is that except for useful mechanics and some particular descriptions of men or professions, there is no need for encouragement”. Thomas Jefferson was even more far against immigrants expressing the wish that there would be “an ocean of fire between this country and Europe, so that it would be impossible for any more immigrants to come hither.” But many people didn’t think that way because the country was so large and people were expanding west and making railroads and it needed people to settle those lands. For most of the countries history the people coming to America were from northern European countries. The “old immigration” consisted of people from northern Europe (English, Dutch, French, Germans, Irish, Scandinavians, Scots and Welsh) who came before the 1880’s.
