In today’s society we heavily rely on the use of video camera systems to ensure the safety of our citizens, structures and country. The increased use of this surveillance technology though presents the issue of video content management - we simply cannot manage and analyze billions of hours of security video footage. So with this dilemma at hand companies have begun to only store and analyze video based upon certain parameters, such as a person opening a door in a warehouse. This type of analysis is referred to as Video Analytics. Currently there are two major forms of this technology in use, Video Motion Detection and Object Video Analysis. It is my point however to impress upon you that Video Motion Detection is a more practical application in today’s world as Object Video Analysis is still in its infancy stages of development.
Since the advent of video camera systems there has always been a need to search video for useful information from the simplest form of the fast forward button in VCR’s to more advanced technology such as facial recognition scan technology based on Artificial Intelligence. As mentioned above, today we employ two major forms of video analysis, Video Motion Detection also know as VMD and Object Video Analysis or OVA. These two technologies allow us to set specific search patterns and only provide us with information deemed useful by the parameters we set. This allows us to efficiently manage video content as well as provide useful and precise video forensics data to law enforcement agencies with the limited need of human interaction.
However, Video Motion Detection and Object Video Analysis are two vastly different types of video analysis. They both do have similarities in the sense that they analyze video frames and return back data decided by the user, but it is in the way that they analyze this data and the method in which they can focus their parameters that interests us.
