Dear Violet,
You must be crazy if you think I am going to allow you to study abroad in France for your next semester of college. I know that you might be thinking that I’m being too rash with my decision but I have thought this out carefully. I have talked this out with your mother and she too agrees with my decision.
We can agree with some of your reasons for going. I agree with you that it is a great experience and that you can learn a lot. I know that you would be able to handle the workload alongside your extra-curricular activities. I also know that it would make you feel so much better getting away from the pressures of college.
Suppose you did go on this study abroad program. If you were ever in need of help, there is no way your mother and I could come and get you. I know that you’re probably saying that you’re old enough to take care of yourself, but to us you’re still our little girl. And when you’re in France, how will you communicate with others? Having an English and French speaking friend can only get you so far. What will you do if you have to go out and buy food for yourself? What would you do if you got lost? These are the types of things I worry about. Another big problem could be money. Sure you’ve been saving up all summer for the plane ticket, but that’s it. A plane ticket won’t cover everything. You’re going to need money for food, clothes, that room you’re staying in, and other expenses that arise. You know that your mother and I can’t pay for all of that along with your college tuition. That would mean you would need to get a job. Having a job alongside your courses is a bad idea. When would you find the time to study and do work. This isn’t even including your outside activities. You wouldn’t have time to play soccer anymore. This whole thing could turn into one giant hassle.
Look, I know why you want to do this. I was a college student too, once. I know the pressures of college...
