Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway was one of the greatest American writers to ever put pen on paper. His writing style was said to be economic and understatement. Hemingway had much influence on twentieth century writing. He was said to be in contrast to his rival William Faulkner. From his humble upbringing to his tragic suicide, Hemingway lived an interesting and unpredictable life.
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born July 21st, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois to Clarence and Grace Hemingway. When little Ernest was born, his father stood out on their front porch and blew a horn to let the neighbors know that his wife had given birth to a boy. While Ernest’s mother had hoped he would gain an interest in music, instead he took a liking to his father’s outdoorsman nature. This would be the reason he longed for adventure and his living in remote places later in life. Hemingway attended Oak Park High School, where he excelled in his English classes. After graduation he had no interest in college and began his writing career for The Kansas City Star. After only a few months he quit his reporting job to try to join the Army, but he was dropped out because of his poor vision. Instead, he joined the Red Cross Ambulance Corps. During his time served he would experience death first hand, leaving him shaken because of the brutality of war. During this time he started drinking heavily, and would continue throughout his life. In July of 1918 he was wounded while delivering supplies this ending his service with the Red Cross. He was later awarded The Silver Medal of Military Valor for dragging a wounded Italian soldier to safety even though he was already injured. After the war Hemingway moved to Toronto, Canada. He acquired a job with the Toronto Star as a freelancer. In 1921 Hemingway married his first wife, Hadley Richardson. Soon after the marriage they moved to Paris, France.
