Video Game Violence and its Effects on Children
In this day and age, video games are an almost essential part of a child’s life, and can be found everywhere. They are a sort of baby sitter for parents who need to do chores around the house. Can these simple things be harmful to your children’s mind? Some people believe that violent video games can cause increased aggression in children, making them violent as well. I personally believe that video games, although they can give children ideas on how to let out their built up aggression, are otherwise quite harmless. I mean, they are just games. Even most of the young children know that these games are not based on real life situations. You can even fly or have super powers in quite a few of them, which is obvious to anyone that it is not realistic.
I am a very good example of how violent video games do not make the children who play them very violent or aggressive. My uncle, who is five years older than me, had plenty of violent video games when I was younger. Because of our age difference I had none, but I was always over at his house. Now he had quite a selection of brutally violent games. The games were ranging from wrestling to games where the point is to crash a bunch of cars. He also had some games about shooting other people and fighting other people for money. Now, I was a young boy when I was first exposed to these various assortments of violent games. If violent video games corrupt children, I should be a mass murderer by now. As you can probably tell due to the fact that I am not shuffling around in ankle chains and hand cuffs, I turned out alright. Yes, I have certain things that may set off my temper, but doesn’t everyone? I just do not see the point in blaming games for raised aggression when it could be anything from abusive relatives to problems with friends.
