It is true that the presence of women of color have by the years increased on the big screen but as always they play the same roles they are “famous” for. From low roles as house cleaners or the nanny to the “white” families, to slaves, in abusive relationships, struggling single parents just to name a few. Women of color make up a huge part of the society and for them who they are have been overshadowed by what the media has continuously portrays them to be. Almost always, there are negative and embarrassing things said and viewed about them and hardly any good things accomplished by these women.
As a woman of color myself I am forced to deal with this stereotyped label of never amounting to anything or being looked at twice where ever I go as if another person besides myself might climb out and make their views different. Women of color have their strengths and weaknesses are questioned before they even have the opportunity to show it to anyone who will even have time to listen to them.
In the movie color purple, Celie who was played by Whoopie Goldberg, who is the main character, is seen to be a young girl who grows into a woman and as she grew her self esteem was tormented by the people she was around. She was told over and over how ugly and pitiful she was and how she would never get a man to love her. All she would ever amount to was cleaning and cooking and catering to her husbands needs. She was abused verbally, physically and emotionally everyday. She was raped and bore two children for her father who later took them away from her and married her off to Mister. He treated Celie just like his properties never taking her feelings into account. She was totally submissive and just did as she was told and hope that one day it would be over. After years of all the abuse, at a family dinner, in the scene, Celie confronts Mr. about all...
