The aim of this assignment is to carry out a literature review on the phenomenon of cancer pain management and the nurse’s role in managing cancer pain. The primary purpose of this literature review is to give the reader a better understanding of how to best manage pain in order to sustain a comfortable environment for the patient. According to (Aveyard, 2007) a literature review is extensive coverage of a study and the interpretation of literature that relates to a certain topic. When a literature review is undertaken the research question should be identified, then answered by searching and analysing relevant literature. This review seeks to find the role of the nurse and interventions used for cancer pain management and assessment. Below there are three definitions on Pain, Acute pain, and chronic pain.

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience which can be associated with actual or potential tissue damage and disease. Pain alerts us to danger and can be an early warning sign that there is something wrong within our bodies. The level of pain and tolerance to pain is unique for each individual and will range from mild discomfort to excruciating pain. According to (Melzack and Wall, 1996) Pain is an intricate experience which consists of sensory, emotional, and cognitive dimensions. Throughout life pain is a common experience to every individual. In early life through to old age each individual will learn the meaning of pain through their own experiences. Pain is universal and individuals will rely on previous experiences to communicate the severity of their pain. Different individuals will perceive pain differently. Therefore it is important to carry out a pain assessment on each individual which is tailored to their needs. There are different types of pain acute pain and chronic pain.
