Every single dam in the country could have played a vital role in the solving today’s problems which seem to be insurmountable. But the incompetence of our politicians and the governments has led us to a disastrous situation. Kalabagh dam for instance has been a great troubling issue with many controversies over time. Kalabagh dam, by the experts on the issue, is claimed to be very beneficial for a state like Pakistan in help solving two of the major issues faced by the state, water shortage and electricity crisis, which are also linked. Every province except Punjab, has been opposing the project, giving some indefinite reasons.(Hassnain, 2005) [ (Dawn News, 2010) ]. This would have added a huge amount of power to the power generation capacity of the country. Recently there have been many protests in different cities, against the electricity crisis, industrial sector claims the worst situation ever [ (Faruqui, 2010) ]). And India on the other hand is violating the water rights of our country by building dams at rocket speed on the water which according to laws belongs to Pakistan. And again our politicians and leaders are up to nothing.
On the other hand, the assets of our top politicians and leaders are increasing rapidly. Even when they claim that we are running low on finances. Recently our finance minister, Shaukat Tareen, resigned, claiming that the leaders are not willing to cut their living standards and that too in such a situation. Petrol prices are on a hike, edibles are getting out of reach of a normal man. But our politicians still don’t hesitate living like kings. The limit of corruption in the country seems to be the sky. According to an international organization, Pakistan stands at 4th position in the world’s most corrupted states. The current crisis is somehow due to the low power generation capacity, but the main reason of shortage in supply is the unpaid amount to the IPPs (independent power producer).
