Ethical Considerations in a Counselling relationship: As counsellors we are duty- bound to the code of ethics as set down by the New Zealand Association of Counsellors. Those cover cultural, age, gender, religion, disability, language and respect the confidence we have been entrusted with. Ethical issues are often linked, which makes it vital that counsellors follow the code of ethics, legal boundaries and responsibilities. {Being a competent counsellor is more complex than simply respecting other people. Counsellors must also be able to understand the difference between people. The American Counselling Association (1995) code of ethics puts it this way,} and I agree with this statement because we are all different it’s not only our nationality, culture but the way we think and understand at a different level. It also shows us how much damage it can cause everybody involved. The question I would like to ask is how the other school and staff members didn’t intervene? Ethical boundaries are a hard one; how far we can go with a pat on the back or that extra-long handshake. What’s too far? How about smiling in the wrong times keep smiling for too long? I think common sense plays a big part in our role as counsellors. We also have to remember there is more to the word ethics like the simple things, telling the truth not misleading someone and helping others, obeying the law and doing what is morally right. It will not be easy to handle all situations in everyone’s favour and for us to keep or own feelings out of the equation. There will be difficult decisions for me in the future as a counsellor. I think the important thing to remember is for every case to be looked at thoroughly in the best interest of the
