Shakespeare writes his work with true complexity. The story of Romeo & Juliet is filled with events that may be stamped or labelled as fate, or maybe just bad luck. Events of fate tend to link from one to the other; but not always do they happen in such a manner. Sometimes one bad choice, one solemn mistake by one party can trigger a whole series of events. A beautifully fateful meeting turns into a beautifully fateful death. Shakespeare may be trying to say two different things. Some events may have happened all on account of fate, or perhaps, maybe one bad mistake ended up triggering them. Each character is star-crossed in a sense that they have had events already planned out for them by something or by a greater power. It may also be the fact that the choices made can control the fate of a character. Many people go out on a daily basis and make many decisions - decisions that change the path of their life; whether it be short or long term, good or bad. One choice can completely alter what has been planned and then fate will bring on many different challenges. Not always will someone make their own decisions. Events that occur to others may be results of choices other people have made for them or relating to them. A person will trigger or alter what may happen. Despite the fact that the whole play is based on account of fate, the star-crossed characters have had to make a decision prior to the events that were soon to come.

Life can throw many things at us. Not always will they be pleasant. What we choose to do with each given situation may be the factor that alters our fate. One simple action will in fact change a whole lot. One person would suddenly come up and say “God gi’god-den. I pray, sir, can you read...” and you could reply no or maybe “…stay, fellow, I can read.” (Act 1, scene 2, lines 57-63.) Romeo had chosen to help the man read.
