This article mainly talks about what caused the rise of gas prices here in the United States. Today, gas prices soar toward $4 per gallon and drivers such as myself feel the pain every time visiting the gas pump. Consumers blame the high gas prices due to the greed of the oil companies and how they would lay the entire technicalities of rising gasoline prices at the feet of price-gouging monopoly-exploiting oil companies.
Rise of gas prices is due to the increase in demand, a decrease in supply, or both.
There are a couple problems that have caused our gas prices to rise. First, supplies of oil have been taken off the market by environmentalists’ demands that no more oil wells be drilled, that no petroleum products be refined and that no oil be transported by pipeline, ship, rail or truck. Second, supplies of oil have been taken off the market by the oil cartel such as the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Third, producing, refining and transporting oil has become far more expensive, again because of pressure from environmental activists. Fourth, demand for gasoline has increased enormously, largely because of the growing economies of China, India and other countries. Lastly, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan also are incremental demand increases, further raising oil prices.
In my opinion, if we really want gasoline to drop, we would make the environmental movement prove all their “nuclear destruction of the world” claims about global warming, the tragedy of effects from species lost and a fragile environmental balance. In addition, I believe that politicians have to clearly express the anticipated impact that their vote on any matter will have on gasoline prices.
