Intelligent Design
After reading this article my first thoughts about ID (Intelligent Design) were wow! I really did not know that ID could ever and actually was being taught as a factual science. I couldn’t believe that what seemed to me like something from the Bible was being interpreted and explained as science. To me this seems like a problem, that ID was being taught in school. As a firm believer in Evolution when I read about ID I was shocked. I still struggle to grasp the fact that not only do people believe that ID is a legitimate scientific theory, but that it has gained so many followers and so much popularity. This is astonishing to me, and it makes me think what is this country coming to, in this modern day and age how could we teach a slightly altered version of The Bible as a legitimate science.
Intelligent Design is based off the idea that a “Master Designer” created all life on the earth; this “Master Designer” could be interpreted as “God” from The Bible. The argument the scientists behind Intelligent Design put forth is that the creation of “life” on our earth is too complex to be just a simple coincidence, and that there are too many steps missing from the evolutionary pattern (from one species to another). Therefore the followers of ID believe a “designer” created life. While the theory of evolution seems reasonable and in some ways is testable, this theory of Intelligent Design is not. In the article it states “I.D. is not a scientific theory amenable to testing, but an opinion, a philosophical preference, a belief” (1). This statement proves that ID is in actual fact not a science, but a clever masked variation of religious belief and The Bible.
