THE OUTSIDER BY S. E. HINTON
The Outsiders was set in the e1960’s in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ponyboy Curtis who belongs to a gang of kids that call themselves the Greasers because of their long greasy hair have a long going argument with another gang of kids who are going the Soc’s, because they are the popular rich kids from the Westside of town. When Ponyboy is walking home from the movies one night is jumped by a group of Soc’s. All of the greasers come to help Ponyboy, including his two brothers, Darry and Sodapop, Johnny, Two-Bit, Dally and Steve. Darry takes care of Ponyboy and Sodapop because their parents were killed in a car accident.
The next night Ponyboy and Johnny get into a fight with two Socs’ Bob and Randy. One of the Socs holds Ponyboy’s head under the water at the fountain in the park because he was talking to his girlfriend, Cherry Valance, at the movies the night before. He tries to drown Ponyboy. Johnny pulled out his switch blade and stabbed Bob. Bob dies and Dally takes Johnny and Ponyboy away from town to hide out until the police stop looking for the killer of the popular white kid. Ponyboy and Johnny hide in an abandon church where the cut and dye their hair and read Gone with the Wind and discuss poetry.
After a few days Dally comes to visit and tells them that the anger and tension between the Greasers and Socs has gotten worse and a big rumble is planned for the following night. Cherry Valance, the Soc that Ponyboy was talking to at the movies, told Dally that she feels partial responsible for Bob’s death because she should have never talked to Ponyboy in the first place. She has been meeting Dally and telling him what is
going on with the Socs’. Johnny tells Dally that he wants to go back and turn himself in to the police.
