Discuss American Society during the New Era/ Jazz Age (1919-1929). What do you see as the issues of major importance? What effects did they have on Americans who lived through them.
It’s the end of World War I, and business is booming, passing of the 18th amendment for prohibition left the nation demanding alcohol. Saloons are being replaced with speakeasies as means to get around local law enforcement. The underground saloons basically require a secret code to gain access. Homemade alcohol “moonshine,” or “bathtub gin” are very high proof alcohol, some who consumed it would experience blindness and even death.
Organized crime stepped into Chicago to meet consumer’s needs for alcohol. Gangsters used prohibition money to also become involved with drugs, gambling, and prostitution. There were over 500 murder’s In Chicago by gangsters in the 1920’s. One example of gang related crime was the St. Valentine’s day Massacre, in which Al Capone’s gang gunned down and killed seven member’s of “Bugs” Morgan’s’ gang.
In 1920 general motors’ revolutionized the Auto industry, by establishing the Consumer Credit Agency. Synthetic fibers, Paints, and Dyes were introduced in the car industry, meaning everyone could have different colors of cars instead of Black only. Henry Ford minimized his costs by building a plant that could mass produce automobiles; This would increase in intensity and thus increase the potential risk.
Moreover, in “moving the work to the men” by means of an assembly line, a second fundamental of mass production, the ford engineers found a method to speed up the slow men and slow down the fast men. Ford could employ unskilled workers in jobs that had previously required highly skilled craftsmen, but only if he kept his workforce happy.
