What is the primary purpose of college education? There are probably several reasons that make going to college important. The most important reason to go to college is that students want to learn more about things that interest them. However, college students have not much time for themselves during a semester. “most of us, as students, saw our hours as in need of killing-as opposed to thinking about giving a few of these hours to our communities in one way or another-colleges should consider instituting a service requirement for graduation (Egger 583).” I think it is important to volunteer a few hours for students responding their lifelong commitment. Students should be required to perform community service because it would teach them ability to carrying out responsibilities, leadership, being well-organized and gaining personal benefits. There are two opposite viewpoints of college education which were written by Dave Eggers, the founder of 826 National, nonprofit learning centers, and Patrick Allitt, a professor of American history at Emory University.
Dave Eggers’s “Serve or Fail (582-585)” is originally appeared in the New York Times in 2004. He argues that college should consider instituting a service requirement for graduation. In his response titled, “Should undergraduates specialize? (591-594)”, Patrick Allitt, who graduated University of Oxford in England, he argues that college education should be like Oxford such as education system should be particularly specialized. He never understood American education system that should take other several courses even different major and other curriculum. College education is very important to freshmen and senior students for their future. So, Dave Eggers gives us some purpose of college education to link with volunteering that help students getting beneficial effects.
