Me, Myself and Politics

As I began to take the PoliticsMatch quiz, I thought “There is no need for me to take this quiz; I know where I stand and what party I belong to.” Once I finished and the results popped up, I was taken aback in surprise when they read “libertarian-leaning conservative.” I have always considered myself a hard-core conservative. At first, I took an ignorant stance and was upset that my results did not match what I thought I believed. Then as I reviewed my answers, I realized I hold the same views as the hard core conservative on most issues, but not all of them.
I strongly agree with the textbook, Government in America, by George C. Edwards, Martin P. Wattenberg, and Robert L. Lineberry, when it states, “Yet one can predict how the majority of young people will vote simply by knowing the political leaning of their parents” (Pearson Longman: 1995, pg176). Like many other teens, I was first introduced to an ideology through my parents, which happen to be the Republican Party. My father is in the Air Force Reserves and has served in Operation Decisive Edge, Operation Northern Watch, Operation Southern Watch and Operation Enduring Freedom. He is a strong conservative, for one main reason, the issue of supporting the Armed Forces. He believes that there is an obligation to maintain a strong military to protect our country and freedoms and the military should be paid sufficiently. Since I fully and whole heartily support our troops and the War in Iraq and I feel very passionately about this issue I strongly agree with my father and the Republicans. His second main reason for voting Republican deals with taxation. He believes that the wealthy should not have to be taxed more just because they make more money; he supports the Flat Tax, as do I. I think if my father was not in the Air Force, I would not had been as influenced to feel this strongly about supporting the military as I do, but I know I would support to...
