Abstract
Everything in our life depends on how we communicate with others. From personal to professional and from school to work, without communication there can be no understanding. Likewise, without understanding there is a failure to communicate. We must understand communication in whole as well as how to establish and maintain proper communication in all aspects of our lives. In turn, proper communication techniques will help us to establish skills, enabling effective teamwork, partnership, and leadership. In order to obtain these techniques we need to have knowledge of the differences present. Because, by understanding difficulties others may face, we are presented with a “heads up”, giving us an advantage over what would normally be a tedious situation. Therefore businesses should keep in focus that everyone is different. In the differences that everyone possesses lie diversity, which should be embraced and learned.
Communication is the key to success. Brian Tracy wrote, “Communication is a skill that you can learn. It’s like riding a bicycle or typing. If you are willing to work at it, you can improve the quality of every part of your life. (Brainyquote.com, 2010) Communication is a key factor in our lives; both personal and occupational. It consists of different variables. Verbal communication can be presented in formal, informal, direct, and indirect forms. Non-verbal communication can be expressed through voice, facial expression, body language, personal space, and environment. Communication can be affected by individual and organizational cultural diversity. “Virtually everyone communicates at work” (Adler & Elmhorst, 2010) whether or not the communication is successful is a different issue altogether.
