Through the ages art has been a way to express one’s self in a way that can be shared with the world. There are many different types of art like oil painting, drawing, sculpture and the list goes on and on. In all art works the artiest uses different formal elements and principles of design to create peace. A couple of artiest that I will be comparing and contrasting, through these techniques, are Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and Willem de Kooning’s Woman on a Bicycle. Both artists use some of the same techniques but also use different techniques to express their work.
In Sandro’s peace The Birth of Venus is a representational peace that depicts a nude woman standing in a shell on the seashore with a woman to her side holding a robe of some sort and to her other side angels are flying. The artiest creates a sense of three dominion by using things such as scale, overlapping objects and vanishing point. The objects closer to the picture plane overlap the objects further from the picture plain. The artiest also makes the people and objects closer to the picture plain much larger than the things in the background. The vanishing point in the work is way off down the shoreline, which give a very good sense of depth to the work.
Sandro’s work is also symmetrically balanced on both sided and uses implied lines to draw the viewer’s eyes to the center of the work. The angels on the left side of the work even out with the woman an the forest on the other side bringing an even weight to the work. But on both sides of the work the characters look at the woman in the middle of the picture and draws the viewers eyes to the woman using implied lines.
Willem de Kooning’s Woman and Bicycle is a very abstract work that uses many colors and shapes. The picture does not really depict a woman and a bicycle it is mainly a lot of colors and shapes and marks made, but if you look more closely with a little imagination one can see figures...
