All my life I have been raised in the Catholic church. Every Sunday after mass I would walk back to the religious education center with my friends Tera and Kristina to begin our 2-hour long religious education classes. It became so routine that it was more of a chore than an opportunity to learn more about my faith. Growing up, I always drug my feet Sunday morning because I hated sitting through the same old mass every week. Catholic Mass is very repetitious and boring if you are a young kid trying to sit still in the pews. It is still repetitious but it’s not as boring as it used to be. My sophomore year in high school I went through the sacrament of confirmation. This is the year that my relationship with God grew strong. We got to talk to family members about how their faith in God has impacted their lives and it truly touched me. During my confirmation, I started praying the Rosary every other night before I went to sleep and reading a passage from the Bible the other nights. God has been a source of strength in times of strife for me especially since I have moved away from home.
When I came to college, I met people of all different faiths. Me, being very curious and inquisitive, had many conversations about religion and faith with people of a wide spectrum of beliefs; from Atheist to Jehovah’s Witness. One thing that I have taken from all this is there is no right or wrong way to believe. Growing up in the Catholic Church, you are taught that being Catholic is the only way to be and the rest are going to purgatory. My faith in Jesus Christ has not faltered but my faith in the Catholic Church has. I no longer attend Catholic Mass on a regular basis, however, when I do go to church, I try to attend different types of churches. I feel that there is no wrong way to worship God and by visiting different denominations, I am strengthening my relationship with Him.
