High School Social Hierarchy
You would think being a teenager is hard enough without a high school social hierarchy, but fitting in seems to be what we all strive for during those four years. Going into high school as a freshman at an all girls catholic school is extremely nerve racking, even though there are not any boys, because this is where growing up begins. Of course when you first show up, everything seems exciting and welcoming because the faculty, staff, and a few bubbly upper class students help you out with classes and generally getting things together. They give us a sense of relaxation and persuade us that this high school is different because the people are friendly. Little did we know how unrealistic that was.
My first day of high school, I got ready in my dorky freshman uniform, skirt down to my knees and a polo shirt one too many sizes big(so we can grow into them). It was the first day with all the students and not just the freshmen. I knew about 5 girls starting out as a freshman with me but I didn’t know them very well. I showed up at school not really knowing what to do or where to go. Although I didn’t know anyone or what grade anyone was in, it seemed everyone could point me out, calling me a “freshy” or “newby”, telling me to get into the back of the line at the cafeteria. The upper classmen don’t seem to care who got there first, it is actually based on hierarchy. The seniors are always allowed to cut, how could I not know? People laughed at me because of the way I looked and because during my lunch, I sat by myself eating. I felt lonely and already hated school.
I finally saw someone I know and began to stick around her. To me, she seemed so glamorous, she had an older sister who already was at the school and I knew she had money because she had a Chanel purse and a fancy pair of shoes.
