The story that Woolfe tells in her prose revolves around a mark on the wall that she is

describing.Throughout, she is in consatant thoughts that she expresses vividly through her thorough

decriptions and clever imagery.

" "the three chrysamthemums in the round glass on the mantel piece" (para 1, line 4)

The fact that she mentions the chrysanthemums,sets the scene socially by telling us about the

period of time that she is living in and the that the people she describes are middle class.

Furthermore, the imagery she uses enables the reader to form mental pictures that tell the story.

It is almost cinematic throughout as the scenes are increasingly visual.

"As ants carry a blade of straw so feverishly, and then leave it."

The visual scenes constantly dart from her own fairy tale fantasies and back to the mark on the

wall.

As her train of thoughts progress, the pace becomes fast moving and this is engineered

through an explanation of the fast movement of life by likening it to 'being blown through the tube

at 50 miles an hour! (para 3 line 16)

Woolfe delves the reader into her 'tangent' train of thought and darts from describing the weight

and history of civilisation to talking about the loss in her life by describing the jewellery and varios

artifacts that she has lost; before she finally draws us back to the mark on the wall in the 5th

paragraph.

Woolfe exagerates alot and her descriptions are elaborate and extreme.

"Shot out at the feet of God entirely naked! Tumbling head over heels in the ashodel meadows

like brown paper parcels pitched down a shoot in the post office!" (para 3 line 17)
