Good Morning. Today I want to speak to you on the subject of violence in the home and how it affects children. I will show you how television, domestic and sexual abuse and other negative influences in the home affect children and the way they grow up and function in society. But first I want to start off showing you a short video. YOU TUBE VIDEO!! Basically that video sums it all up but I would like to take it a step farther. Violence in the home teaches children that it is socially acceptable to treat others the same way. Children that watch violent television shows such as, WWE (world wrestling entertainment), even animated shows like The Simpsons or Beavis and Butthead, often become immune or numb to the horror or violence. They gradually accept violence as the way to solve problems both big and small. In some cases, children associate themselves with the characters and often imitate the actions on other children or parents. The American Psychological Association believes that children are more prone to become violent if they witness acts of violence on television. It also concludes that children become more fearful to the world around them after seeing violence and are more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways to others. Research shows the average hour of television viewing has four to five acts of violence. Children's programming, such as cartoons, average 20 to 25 violent acts every hour
"If you add it up, the average child, with those statistics has seen 100,000 acts of violence by the time they leave elementary school on television and 8,000 murders."
The nation's first major study on the effects of TV violence was a 1972 U.S. surgeon general's report that said, "Televised violence, indeed, does have an adverse effect on certain members of our society."
