Maryland’s Board of Education recently approved Sex Ed. Curriculum for students in 8th grade and up. That is still to late; maybe ten or fifteen years ago teenagers waited until they got to the 8th grade to experiment with sex , but in today’s age and times our children are barely waiting until 5th grade. Sexuality Education (Sex Ed.) should be implemented into the fifth grade curriculum of Maryland State Public Schools to help defer teen pregnancy, decrease the rise of STD’s, and assist parents recognizing early education is the best education.
“You can’t get pregnant your first time, the withdrawal method always work, and if the female is on top she can’t get pregnant”, said an 11 year old girl in the 5th grade. Unfortunately, this very young lady attends a Maryland State Public school. She has two more years before she received sex ed. Teen Pregnancy is on the rise because teens are having their menstrual cycles earlier and are not educated enough about how their bodies function. If the curriculum was implemented in the fifth grade the percentage of teen pregnancy would decline greatly. Many females start having intercourse early to fit in with the “crowd” and to receive love. If these young impressionable females were taught about their bodies being sacred and how to not give in to peer pressures in a sexuality education course the dropout rates of teen mothers would not be on the rise in Maryland. Teens must be educated about sex and the consequences of pregnancy. It needs to be known that it is not a fad and yes, it can happen to them.
“I won’t catch anything because me and my friends can tell if a boy has some sort of disease or STD if he has really bad skin, and smells,” an uneducated statement from a 12 year-old girl. As a matter of fact many teenagers pride themselves on being able to point an infected person out by just looking at them.
