Scent of a Woman
In the 1992 film, Scent of a Women, three students commit an act of vandalism on the headmaster Mr. Trask’s car. Charlie Simms is a witness to this crime and he must make an important decision on whether or not to tell the headmaster who was responsible for the act. The headmaster knows he was a witness and if Charlie tells him, he agrees to give him a full-ride Scholarship to Harvard. The boys committed the crime threaten Charlie with isolation if he tells. Charlie makes the right decision not to tell.
Charlie is a young boy who had a lot of growing up to do. He is very mature and smart but he isn’t sure what to do about Mr. Trasks bribery. When he went on the weekend trip to New York with Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade, Charlie learns more than he could realize. He learned about life and not school. Charlie learns things that he wouldn’t have learned with his friends, or at school. With Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade, Charlie realizes that telling on the boys would not only be a mistake but it would make him a sell out.
If Charlie was to tell on the three boys who vandalized Mr. Trask’s new car, than that would make him a snitch. He wouldn’t have to worry about the boys making it to where he had no friends. Reason being is nobody would want to be him friend. None of the other boys would trust him and he would be isolated anyway. Also, to bribe someone is morally wrong. It shows a scene of responsibility and has no morals, as well as accepting a bribe. When you accept a bribe, it makes you selfish because you are putting someone else in trouble to get yourself higher. Charlie had gotten to Baird School by his hard work. He is very intelligent and got a scholarship to attend this school because of his hard work and smartness. With all this hard work already done and he has something to show for it, accepting a free ride to Harvard just by telling Mr. Trask who committed the crime would make all his work worthless....
