Stress is defined as 'a mentally or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition occurring in response to adverse external influences and capable of affecting physical health'. In simpler terms this mean that stress is a reaction to a situation where a threat to ones well being, either real or imagined, is perceived. although some stress is necessary to keep us alert, prolonged stress can have serious psychological and physical effects. This is due to the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS). GAS has three stages, Alarm (also known as Fight or Flight mode) occurs when a person first perceives a threat, and it has some physiological effects. breathing rate, heart rate and blood pressure increase, more sweating occurs, and the muscles tense up. this is to prepare us for either staying and fighting the threat, or fleeing. The next stage is Resistance, during this stage, your body attempts to return to its former state (homeostasis) , and tries to restore lost energy and repair damage. During this period, people tend to have little enthusiasm for life. Finally, if the stress can not be overcome, humans tend to go into Exhaustion, and this is a very dangerous state. The body's resource become depleted, people become depressed and irritable, and it can cause further health problems. Due to this, it is often helpful to attempt to overcome your stress by using stress management techniques. These are ways in which to try and relax yourself, and to retrain your thoughts, when faced with a negative and stressful situation, also known as a stressor. One of the first stress management techniques is exercise. there are many forms of exercise, from strenuous exercise like aerobic and strength training, to more relaxing exercise, like flexibility and balance training. Exercise has been shown to decrease cortisol and increase endorphin, making you feel good.
