A yellow school bus stopped in front of me. As I stepped onto the bus, I could see many unfamiliar faces scrutinizing me as if I was a stranger. “It’s the first day of school. It will be tough. Be confident,” I told myself. The breeze through the window was blowing my hair as I closed my eyes to imagine what I would be facing once I got off the bus.
Finally the bus arrived at my new school, Tuscarora Junior High School. As soon as the bus came to a stop, I stepped into a world in which everything was strange to me. I didn’t know where to go or who to ask.
After getting directions from the lady at the main office, I finally found my homeroom. I noticed a short woman with red curly hair and freckles on her cheeks standing in front of the room. As I approached, she asked, “Are you a new student? Hi. I am Mrs. Fitzgerald,” and started to explain where I was supposed to go for the rest of the day. A piece of paper with my schedule on it meant absolutely nothing to me unless someone could solve this complicated puzzle for me. English was simply an indecipherable code that I could not comprehend.
The school was very small and cozy with about 400 students. There were no other Koreans in my classes, and it was then that I realized the language I was familiar with was not going to help me with anything. I needed to learn English. I had no other choice since I wanted to make friends and learn something from the classes I was taking.
I was still alone during lunch. I got in the lunch line as I watched how other kids acted. They were talking about something that I could not understand. I could see a very thin line that separated me from them. “I wish I could cross that line. I wish I could join and laugh with them,” I thought. Then I decided, “I must learn English as quickly as possible. I have to.”
I started bringing an English-Korean dictionary to every class and looked up every word I did not know. When I didn’t have my dictionary...
