Similar to its predecessors such as Mother India, Guru Dutt’s “Pyaasa” ("The Thirsty") represents a high point in Indian cinema which reflected the concerns of social injustice that took place in India post-independence. As the third movie we have screened in class, I have found “Pyaasa” to be one of the most endearing and touching films we have watched thus far in class. As the star of his own film, Guru Dutt personifies the life of an anguished poet, Vijay, whose interests in poetry were gone unappreciated by most of the people around him.
As I watched the movie, one of the most enlightening parts of the movie came in the beginning when the anguished poet, Vijay, is lying on grass outside. Unlike most people who lived busy lives and did not make the effort to enjoy the world around them, Vijay saw the world in a different light. He adored the flowers, bees, sky, and all the beauty that nature had to offer. However, his “escape” from the real world ends abruptly when a bee is killed by a person walking by. Vijay sees this inhumane act and is saddened by the fact that something as innocent and beautiful as bee that does such something beautiful in nature could be killed for no valid reason. This scene introduced the viewers to the kindhearted and innocent Vijay, and also set the tone for the rest of the movie, as it was a parallel to the fate that was awaiting him.
In a world where most of his “gibberish” poetry is considered too depressing by most post of newspaper editors w ho refuse to publish them. Most of his works end up as wastepaper, which is then purchased by the prostitute Gulab. At the same time, Vijay also begins working for his ex-girlfriend Meena’s publisher husband, Mr. Ghosh, in hopes of having his poetry published. While working for him, Vijay’s and Meena’s love for each other rekindle.
