A Classless Society
Throughout history, mankind has strived to create a society in which the needs of all who live within it are met. Many different creative thinkers have pondered upon the idea of an ideal society. It may be that a perfect society can only be achieved in heaven.
In “womanmansion to my sister mourning her mother,” author Hattie Gosset describes her idea of heaven to a friend whose mother has passed away. She expresses her negative views of the Capitalist society her friend’s mother was living in on earth. The author speaks positively of the communal society existing in her idea of heaven. Hattie Gosset expresses her beliefs not only in the contents of her story but in the way in which it is written.
The author speaks negatively to her friend of the Capitalist society on earth. The term Capitalism is quite commonly used to describe the social system in which we now live. The woman who the author refers to throughout the story was obviously part of the working class, also known as the proletariats. The working class includes anyone who earns their living by selling their labor power and being paid a wage or salary for their labor time. In the statement, “ Riding an assembly line merry go round forever and ever would make anybody tired and bored and dizzy and sick and crazy,” the author is showing that she is sympathetic to the working class. The capitalist class, also called the bourgeoisie, includes anyone who gets their income not from labor as much as from the surplus value they appropriate from the workers who create wealth. The income of the capitalists, therefore, is based on their exploitation of the workers. The author expresses her resentment toward the capitalist class and her desire for a different society in the afterlife in her statement, “ I really hate to think that after working and slaving to meet the demands of various masters on earth all her life like it is said in the obituary that your...
