With the progression of our society, video gamers on constantly on the hunt for the next
big game that will satisfy their inner most fantasies of their imagination. The older
generations remember the Atari or the NES systems which are considered ancient. The
days of Mrs. Pac Man and Super Mario could hardly be called violent or sexually explicit
but with new systems came better graphics and thus alternate themes and goals that
maybe sexually or violently suggestive. Games are assigned ratings by the
Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) to inform the general public of the video
games contents but that doesn’t guarantee that an inappropriate game can’t make its
way into a young gamers hands. The average age of a gamer is around thirty years of
age. The exposure of a violent video game to an undeveloped mind can alter the
behavior of the individual to make them seem overly aggressive and hostile if exposed
to the material for an extended amount of time. There needs to be better regulation on
the content in our video games as to avoid the responsibility to the claim that we as a
society condom and harbored such violent scenarios to be played in our houses or
reenacted outside our home. Granted that the producers of a violent video game are well
within their right to do so by the means of the constitution but there is a fine line between
gory entertainment and adding fuel to the fire concerning a dangerous mind. It was
proven that some of the school shooters were avid gamers and played violent video
games to pass the time. Video games are not to be blamed entirely for any violent
mishaps that may happen in our society but they have to be taken into account as a
factor so that we can modify the problem at hand.
