Klein-Levin Syndrome is the one of sleep disorders, and it is also called a rare form of periodic hypersomnia associated with hyperphagia occurring. The main symptom is extended sleeping hours, up to 20 hours, with the extreme hunger. When the affected individuals are awake, they may experience irritability, lack of energy, and lack of emotions. They may also undergo confusion and hallucinations. Symptoms are cyclical, and may continue for days to weeks. Most of symptoms are related to malfunction of the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls appetite and sleep. However, the syndrome usually disappears after the age of 40 because it occurs mostly in adolescent males. The exact cause of syndrome is unknown, but some of cases, it is occurred by a fever, stress, or overexposure to sunlight.
The syndrome typically strikes during late adolescence or early adulthood, and it is 3 times more frequent in boys than girls. KLS usually goes away with the advancing age. Since the cause of the syndrome is unknown, there is no specific reasons that the adolescent males are targeted. Of 186 reported cases, patients with primary KLS were 34 from Americas ( 27 in the United States of America, 2 in Canada, 3 in Brazil, 1 in Argentina), 75 from Europe ( 22 in Germany, 12 in Great Britain, 10 in France, 7 in Czechoslovakia, 7 in Italy, 6 in Sweden, 3 in the Netherlands, 1 in Ireland, 2 in Spain, 2 in Denmark, 1 in Belgium, 1 in Croatia, 1 in Cyprus, 1 in Poland), 1 from Africa (Nigeria), 53 from Asia (27 in Israel, 10 in India, 6 in Japan, 4 in Turkey, 3 in Iran, 1 in Taiwan, 1 in China, 1 in Pakistan), and 3 from Australia.
Though the definite treatment is not present, alternate treatments are allowed to use, but it is limited. Alternate treatments may treat neurologically and psychiatrically because its symptoms are a mix of manifestations of neurological illnesses and psychiatric disorders, so the sleepiness and the mood disorders should be treated...
