Higher Learning takes the real moments of college students and intensifies these moments to make them more appealing and influential to the people watching the movie. The movie takes different groups of people that learn from others what is wrong and right. These people, who are separated by racial differences struggle to be accepted and therefore have to go through many test and lose to learn what is really important in college. Mike Epps is the main character and he plays the role of the black athlete, a good guy, who seems not to be affected by peer pressure. He is tested in the class by his difficult teacher that makes him do extra work to prove that he is in college to learn, but he also tested outside the classroom by his peers who are racist towards him. He has a group of friends that support him as well as a girlfriend that dies in the end based on the actions of a racist group on campus. This movie uses all the situations to teach.
Mike Epps is taught by is professor the truths of life through his school work. His professor stresses the point that it is better for him to be a good student and a good athlete. The professor is willing to teach all the students this same message, not just Mike Epps character. However, Epps role was identified closely in the movie. The student-professor relationship was stressful for Epps mainly because he felt like he was stereotyped as an athlete and picked on by the professor because he had to write his paper more than three times before turning it in. The professor wanted him to work as hard as he does when he runs track on the track team. Epps later learns that the support from the professor was useful because it increased his studying and made him work harder in both the classroom and on the track.
