Kilbourne’s essay “The more You Subtract, the More You Add’: Cutting Girls Down to Size”,
states and explains how advertisements are giving young women false hopes and unrealistic
ideas of beauty by purchasing certain items from perfume, clothes, food, drinks, etc. Kilbourne’s
essay also gives examples of how advertisements are giving younger women false powerments;
which makes younger women believe that buying a certain product will increase their beauty,
self image, inner beauty and even more. Young women are more likely persuaded by buying into
advertisements with unrealistic realities because most young women tend to spend more on
consumer products, which seems to be the dilemma. For example, “Teenage girls spend over
$4 billion annually on cosmetics alone.” ( Kilbourne, 2000 p. 149) Sadly this is influenced by
advertisements, young women are getting the idea they have to be extremely beautiful, thin, and
also have the latest products to achieve this high standard of unreachable beauty. This illusion
that advertisements are portraying makes women believe they have to look a certain way, from
their body type, personality, beauty, and even from what brand names to wear which is almost
making a cookie cutter type model of what modern women should look and act like. For
example, “primarily girls are told by advertisers that what is most important about them is their
perfume, their clothing, their bodies, and their beauty.” ( Kilbourne, 2000 p. 149) Advertisement

companies are manipulating young women and almost robbing them of their money by making
false advertisements to reach unrealistic goals of beauty. The extreme amount of money that
teenage girls are spending on cosmetics, 4$ billion to be exact, is a large amount of money and
is proof...
