Lord of the Flies is an adventurous and slightly tragic tale of a group of British boys stranded on an island. Though Ralph may be considered the protagonist of the story, there are really four main characters. Simon, Piggy, and Jack play equally important roles in the novel.
Ralph, one of the oldest boys, is perhaps the one that remained the most civilized. This twelve-year old boy had fair hair, was muscular, and had a mild face. Aside from being attractive, he also had the potential to be a great leader. However, he failed to carry out this responsibility throughout the novel. In the beginning, he was elected chief, and he was an effective one. Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before he lost his authority and the others began to rebel. His main priority was getting rescued, while the others just wanted to hunt and have fun.
In a way, Jack could be considered Ralph’s nemesis. While order and rescue were important to Ralph, hunting was the only thing important to Jack. Also, unlike Ralph, Jack was very unattractive. He was a tall, bony boy with red hair and freckles. He was around the same age as Ralph, but Jack felt superior to him. Jack was chosen to be the leader of the choir boys, but he was still jealous of Ralph’s power over the whole group. This jealousy, along with the desire for power, eventually caused Jack to go off and form a group of his own. Jack decided his choir boys would be hunters, and he soon became consumed with hunting. His need to kill rose every day, and his behavior eventually became barbaric. His maniacal antics soon resulted in the death of Simon.
Sadly, the only character that really brought hope and truth was murdered. Simon, though young, was mature for his age. This choir boy was skinny and vivid, with black hair and bright eyes.
