Past and Present Analysis
In the following passage by Thomas Carlyle, the universal narrotor illustrates the importance that work is to man. The author’s opinion can be seen throughout the entire passage. The use of language, repetiton and capitalzation, the author’s views and word choice convince the universal reader to favor his opinion.
To begin, the passage from the “ Past and Present” has some very rich vocabulary and some portions are written in Shakespearian English. The passage is written in a way where the universal author makes his claim and then supports his claim by the references used and the use of quotes to back up his argument. This is a tactic used my lawyers and is rather effective for the use of persuasion; when the support for the claims do in fact make sense making the universal reader think and ponder on what the universal author is trying to say.
Moreover, the use of repeition is used throughout the entire passage. The God and relgion is mentioned heavily in this passge. The words “ God, knowledge, man , nature, and work” and reapeated several times to really emphasize these words and their contribution to the passge. Since the passge, does in fact illustrate the importance that work is to man and how it is essential to man’s life, these words are the emphasis words to prove a point and deliver the message in stronger; more effective manner to the universal reader. Repition, has the power to make people believe things sometimes just because thats what they keep on hearing and some people just accept what is being said to them several times and make that a truth statement.
Furthermore, the words that are repeated are also capitalized. Capitaliztion is used for emphasis as well. The use of capitalization can be seen in line seventeen that reads : “ Doubt, Desire, Sorrow, Remorse, Indignation,Despair itself, all these lie beleaguering the soul of the poor day worker...” .
