“Regulating home schooler’s”

A California appellate ruled that parents cannot teach their children at home without some oversight. The decision means that parents must be given some instruction when schooling their children at home, not just let the children watch FOX television for current events. The California Education Code does allow for children to attend private school or to be taught at home by a credentialed teacher. The parents in question did not even meet some of small requirements for home schooling in California. They did have their children enrolled in a private school but the children never went. This ruling has many home schooler’s scared that they may have to prove that their home schooling is an adequate replacement for their children instead of public school. As of now there are very few regulations for home schooling and no safeguard that these children are being taught subjects that are appropriate to their age group.
I have chosen this topic because it was quite interesting to me. I attended a catholic school until 4th grade and then attended public school from then on. I have met a few people who where home schooled or who have home schooled their children. I had thought about home schooling my own children myself but really did not know how to go about it. I think that if you are going to home school your children you need to educate yourself enough to teach your children the appropriate material for their age.
Parents do have the right to decide how and where their children should be educated. I do not understand why some parents do not want their children to attend public or private schools. I know some of the reasoning is because they don’t like what they are being taught, yes it may not all be positive, for example global warming, abortion, and evolution but these are the things that we all need to know to survive in our culture. I believe that their children will not be very efficient...
