From the attached document, it’s about promoting students' positive behaviour and self-discipline in one secondary school. The approach taken by the school is underlying concept of positive discipline. It is believed that students should understand the school's expectations regarding school discipline and play a role in the formulation of school rules, thereby inculcating a sense of commitment. According to Thomas Gordon’s approach, it’s about promoting self-discipline in students which is exactly the aim of the secondary school’s policy to promote students’ behaviour and self-discipline. And we can see the school adopts the practice of involving students in the revision of school rules, which shows the encouragement with a warm, supportive relationship between teacher and student. Unlike traditional strategy, students have the right to express their views rather than judged by teachers only without negotiation. As Gordon stresses minimal control should be used, it’s definitely fit in the “Early Bird Scheme”, because students can submit their homework assignments early in the morning optionally but not under force. Apart from these, back to Gordon’s approach, he has mentioned teacher not just needs to understand student but also involves the student in problem solving about the source of the problem and decisions about its management. Undoubtedly, the “New Identity Scheme” is a good strategy as it provides a chance for students to be responsible for what have they done wrong as offsetting demerits is a fact to tell them what they’re doing (e.g. doing some clean-up work, offering help to teachers, etc) isn’t a must but this is the chance for them to be a good student again with given services rather to say it’s a “punishment”. But do they really understand the source of problems and will manage them well afterwards? Or just keep being late again followed by doing clean-up work?
