The world today is a peculiar one. Humanity is caught in a battle amongst themselves over power and wealth; this has given rise to a modern day global empire, which exploits the world of its natural resources and the people of their freedom. Instead of uniting and sharing ideas with one another, the world today is torn apart from a series of wars and the continuing practices of such primitive ideas as racism, militarism, and nationalism. Through this separation, people cannot help but lose sight of the common goal that would benefit everyone, and instead they are forced to isolate themselves in their attempt to achieve material wealth. However, there are exceptions to this trend: there are good people who support the common good and there are places in the world that have differing priorities other than power and wealth. Growing up on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, I felt a strong sense of community and connection amongst the people of the country. From my personal and social experiences, that connection seems to be seriously lacking in the United States. It is the belief of many Americans that their government, which claims to be a democracy, justly governs the operations of the country and cares about the interests of its citizens by providing them with a safe living environment. However, it is my belief that we live within a degraded political culture which makes it increasingly difficult to describe the country, in any meaningful sense, as a functioning democracy. It becomes more and more apparent every day that the United States’ government is not in control of the country, and that it is instead ruled by a handful of for-profit-mega-corporations which possess enough power to influence the way the world works.
