chapter 2 is based upon janes behaviour, the Red Room and also how jane is perceived in class and gender.
The Red Room both have deathly associations, Red being the colour of blood, and Room, as it contains the minature of Jane's uncle, Mr Reed, who died in the room nine years ago and Jane's belief that she saw a ghost. The Red Room is also a clear symbol of imprisonment, which forshadows imprisonment in more metaphorical ways later on in Janes life. such as her class, gender and religion. Ironically although John is the root of Jane's imprisonment here, the three aggressors in this chapter are all women, it appears Jane's one saviour is her uncle.
The first sentence in chapter 2 forshadows what will be an important theme of the rest of the book. that of female independence or rebelliousness.
we see jane's character through her behaviour. As far as Mrs Reed and Miss Abbott are concerned Jane is a rude, ungrateful menace. Miss Abbott even coldly reminds Jane ' you are less than a servant' as she does nothing to earn her keep, so she should therefore be grateful to Mrs Reed for letting her stay,in such a upper class family.
but we dont percieve jane like that at all. she might be a plain featured girl, but she is very talented, hard working, honest and passionate. she is very skilled at studying, drawing and teaching. she doesnt understand why her aunt treats her so differently, when she had promised Jane's uncle she would treat her like one of her own. which might make her rebellious towards her aunt.
