Muhlenberg County Tourism
The Kentucky state legislature approved the new county of Muhlenberg on December 14, 1798. Muhlenberg County was the thirty-second county addition to the state of Kentucky and was created from parts of the already existing Logan and Christian Counties. Muhlenberg County covered all the land that lay north of the new Christian-Logan County lines northward to the Green River, including at the time, land along the Green River which would become McLean County in 1854. Muhlenberg County is, for the most part, a rural area. Approximately 39 percent of all the land in Muhlenberg is taken up by farm land. However, Muhlenberg is also a place that contains a rich historical background with many different attractions for tourists to come enjoy.
Muhlenberg County is a part of the Bluegrass, Blues, and Barbeque region of tourism in Kentucky and it currently consists of twelve different cities. Like all counties, some of the cities are larger and more economically advanced, while others are much smaller and more rural. The twelve cities include Beech Creek, Beechmont, Belton, Bevier-Cleaton (“Cleaton”), Bremen, Browder, Central City, Depoy, Drakesboro, Graham, Greenville, Luzerne, Martwick, Penrod, Rosewood, South Carrollton and Weir. Of these twelve, there are a few that stand out among the rest as far as tourism goes.
The first is that of Greenville, which was named the county seat upon its settlement in 1799. Greenville is the oldest city in Muhlenberg County and is located in the center of the county. “Greenville has from its beginning been known for its beauty, culture and refinement.” One of the attractions of Greenville that tourists come to enjoy is the “Duncan Museum and Art Gallery.” William Graham Duncan, Sr. is the man responsible for building this beautiful Spanish Mission style home in 1912.
