The Active Learning Style There are different types of learning styles defined simply as "a preferred way of acquiring knowledge and processing information. Many study are already made about learning and teaching style by asking your self what’s my style? In general, they can be called personality learning styles. By having an idea of exactly what a learning style is we can go over the basic types of learning styles. First, there is the Visual Learning Style.
His main preference was for a kinaesthetic approach whilst also utilising aspects of verbal and auditory styles. This I felt was appropriate for the placement and I saw my role as mentor as being the facilitator of stimulating learning experiences. To effectively do this I was required to develop my understanding of the wide variety of teaching skills and learning theories to enable Sidney to gain the best form his time with me. Reece and Walker (2003) describe five main schools of thought regarding learning, Behaviourism, Neo Behaviourism, Cognitive, Humanistic and Gestalt Theory.
Common characteristics in all of these groups can be identified as curiosity, each group or perspective has questions and a need to get answers regardless of any cultural differences. There are four perspectives: Professor, Investigator, Innovator, and Communicator. The Professor focus's on a learning task, trying to master a maximum amount of information in the shortest amount of time. For example; dates, vocabulary and words are the Professors learning perspective. An Investigator is drawn to the truth, they want to gain clarity into an object or idea.that is drawn to the truth.
The auditory style uses music and sounds, while the physical style requires the use of hands and body and touch. Learning styles vary from person to person and even within that one individual there may be a mix of learning styles. It’s also important to note, especially as a student, that your learning styles within particular courses may differ, this is all natural and identifying and recognizing same would enable you to perform better and improve on the quality of your assignments and general performance. Our learning styles are not fixed, meaning that it is one particular style dominant throughout our life, in fact we all have learning styles that are less dominant. Through analyzing and a bit of introspection, I have discovered that my learning style is visual, meaning that I learn and retain information best by seeing it, i.e., in the form of diagrams, charts, tables etc.

In this essay you will see my findings on my particular learning style, personality type, and how I can now benefit by knowing this and how to expand my knowledge in implementing other way of learning. “Overall, learning is a blend of various styles.” (Pheifer, 2009). I discovered that my style of learning is that I am a visual learner! This came as a surprise to me since I always thought of myself as a hands on learner. Although in reflecting on this for a bit I realize that I do visualize and retain more information by reading and studying material, not just the hands on approach.
