Personality Vs. Developmental Disorders

In the article Carey addresses how developmental disorders are affecting American children more and more often. Soon after the beginning of the 1990’s the trend of these disorders became more and more widespread. (1) A culture that once hid its imperfections is now starting to embrace them, but is it for the better? I say this because children all around the country are being drugged up, is this really the way we want our generation to be raised.

Many may believe that developmental and personality disorders are the same thing but the truth is they aren’t. What are the differences might you ask, well they are similar but there are quite a few things that set them apart. The main focus of Carey’s article is how the younger generation is being affected with developmental disorders. Personality disorders are shown to mainly affect adults, with rare adolescent cases. This is because personality disorders take more time to develop, and even if some one is suffering from one doctors usually wait until a patient is an adult to diagnose them with a personality disorder. In the case of developmental disorders everyday kids are being told they have things like Bipolar disorder or A.D.D. left and right.

Also with developmental disorders those afflicted often seem to have different modes. At one point they may be calm and collected and then a switch will flip and they begin the “erratic” behavior that is usually a symptom of a developmental disorder like A.D.D.(1) With personality disorders patients don’t have times when the disorder is at bay or not active they have to deal with it at all times. People with PD’s (personality disorders) for the most part seem unaware that they are not normal; to them it is there perception that the world is not normal and they are. They are often given medication to control there disorders as are those with developmental disorders but in comparison, symptoms of the two types of disorders are completely...
