I. Title: Hardy Weinberg
II. Purpose: The purpose of lab A was to calculate the allele frequency based on Hardy Weinberg equation. In lab 2 the purpose of the lab was to find the genotypic frequencies of one generation to another.
III. Hypothesis: The class population will be in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium because one there is a constant number of students; there will, however, be more dominant alleles than recessive alleles. As for lab B, the genotypic ratios will vary but most likely there will be heterozygous alleles (Aa).
IV. Materials: -sheet of paper
-pen or pencil
-4 flashcards
- a group of students
- PTC paper
- control
V. Procedure: Lab A
A) First one draws a chart 3x3.
B) The instructor will then pass around a strip of PTC and control as well.
C) When instructed to do so place the PTC in your mouth, afterwards do the same with the control.
D) Record whether or not you taste something in either strips.
E) As a class share the data and then sum it up as a whole between nontasters and tasters.
F) Follow the instructors directions
Lab B
A) First label your paper with what has been written on the board by the instructor.
B) Then place the initial class frequencies in the appropriate space.
C) The instructor will pass out 4 flashcards to each student and shall be labeled as followed: A, A, a, a.
D) The process that will be undergone is “mating” between students.
E) The students will walk around the class room and will play with the cards; each flipping one card first and then one student records the result and afterwards each student draw ONE new card and the other student records the new result (the results may be AA, aa, or Aa).
